Quebec City Mosque Shooting: A display of how easily guns can be abused.
A mass shooting occurred in a mosque in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood of Quebec City causing the death of 6 people and the injury of 19 people. One gunman opened fire on the prayers just after the evening praying which ended a little before 8 pm. 53 people were present at the time of the shooting. Two people were arrested, however only one suspect was charged. The gunman is suspected to be 27 years old Alexandre Bissonnette, a student of Université Laval. He was arrested by the police right after the shooting occured on 8:10 pm at an area close to the bridge to Île d'Orléans when he called the police and proclaimed that he was the shooter involved in the shooting. Although he cannot be charged with terrorism since he cannot be connected to a terrorist group, he was charged 6 counts of first-degree murder which can lead to 150 years without parole in jail.
The gunman, Alexandre Bissonnette is a University student at Université Laval. He has model parents and a twin brother. His neighbors claim that they never had any problems with him, nor did he have any records except for traffic violations. Although he is known to have far-right, anti-Muslim, and white nationalist views, he didn't have much motive to commit this voilent crime. This just goes to show how deadly and unpredictable firearm violence can be.
The gunman was armed with an CZ 858 rifle and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The CZ 858 rifle is a fully-automatic assault rifle that can fire 800 rounds of 7.62mm bullets within a minute. This weapon is literally used by nations to fight massive wars. Although fully-automatic firearms are illegal, they can be grandfathered, meaning that if you own one prior to its prohibition it's legal. A weapon that is this deadly shouldn't even be legal in the first place, and his possesion and use of this weapon in the crime just shows the massive flaws within Canada's gun laws. And it questions the Canadian government's decision to allow a weapon that is this deadly to be owned by individuals.
